Q: What does a tutoring session look like?
A: During our first session, I will ask you a bunch of questions to get an idea of how you feel about the CARS section. After that, you will do a practice passage, thinking out loud when you get to the questions. Once I get a good sense of how you approach the section, we will go over the main issues and discuss strategies and methods to address them, including how to implement, analyze, and practice them.
After each session, I will give you exercises to do between sessions that will reinforce what we talk about and give you a chance to practice in ways that go beyond simply doing passages over and over again. Each session we will reassess and work on the areas that would give the most benefit.
We will also go over your practice tests and learn how to analyze them to get the most out of it.
Q: What will you help me with?
A: The CARS section is challenging for everyone in different ways. So I will help you identify specific, actionable areas that you can improve on, then give you the tools necessary to work on them. We will discuss strategies for how you can approach individual passages and how you can approach the section as a whole.
Additionally, I will give you some more meta advice regarding the test as a whole and your specific struggles with it. How can you overcome test anxiety? How can you best utilize practice materials? How can you optimize your sleep? Even what should you eat during the test?
While we will focus on the CARS section, outside factors such as the ones mentioned above affect how well you can do on the section, so if you want to and feel like you will get benefit from discussing test taking strategies, we will talk about them in addition to usual CARS work.
Q: Do you tutor other sections?
A: C/P and B/B? No.
Psych/Soc? Yes! The reason I primarily tutor the CARS section is that I think that is the section where a tutor can be most helpful.
That being said, if you're struggling with P/S and want help, I got a 132 on that section as well and do have experience tutoring it. So just let me know if you would like to work on P/S instead of/in addition to CARS and we can split our time between the two however you think will be most helpful.
Q: Can we do group sessions?
A: If you would like to do sessions with another individual, I am open to it. However, I only have a little bit of experience with group sessions. If you're interested in doing this, contact me and we can discuss logistics, pricing, etc.
Q: Are you better than a YouTube video?
A: I'll be honest, no one's ever asked me this; but I think it's important, so I'm gonna answer it anyway. Things like YouTube videos and Reddit posts can give you tons of really good information and I encourage you to utilize those wonderful free resources.
How I go step beyond those is that I to tailor everything I do to your unique situation. With my experience tutoring over 75 students, I have encountered a wide array of challenges people face and know what methods are most effective for each situation. There are tons of strategies out there, and none of them work for everyone. So, what I'll do is help you pick out the elements from all of them that will best suit you.
